Introduction of the museum building: Former Incheon Branch of Japan's 18th Bank

Incheon Open Port Modern Architecture Museum was established to be used as the Incheon Branch of Japan's 18th Bank. The exterior of the building was finished through the accumulation of stones featuring cement and sand, while wooden materials were used to support the roof of the building. In addition, the building takes the form of a typical Japanese hip roof. As with the roof, the vault and the vault door of the bank have been kept intact so that visitors can appreciate how it originally looked. (Incheon Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 50)

Incheon Open Port Museum

collects, organizes, studies and exhibits a variety of materials related to the modern products of civilization imported through Incheon Port after its opening.

It enables visitors to appreciate materials that were introduced through Incheon for the first time, or that are related to the modern culture created in Incheon.

Introduction of the museum building: Former First Bank of Japan, Incheon Branch

The building of Incheon Open Port Museum was established to be used as Incheon Branch of the First Bank of Japan. The First Bank of Japan, Incheon Branch took charge of purchasing gold bars and alluvial gold produced in the Joseon Dynasty in addition to collecting marine taxes from merchants visiting Incheon Port. As First Bank of Japan Local Office was elevated to a branch office in 1897, a two-story wooden building was reconstructed into the present stone building. As the windows, vaults and pillars of the then bank still remain, visitors can guess what it looked like at that time.
